NEWS RELEASE
JACOBSON'S HOUSE FILE 1 GIVES ALL MINNESOTANS A TAX CUT
Local legislators bill heard by House Tax Committee

ST. PAUL -- State Representative Carl Jacobson says House File 1 -- which he is the chief author of -- will give all Minnesotans a tax cut. The legislation was recently heard in the House Tax Committee and will possibly included in the omnibus tax bill due out in the next few weeks.

"House File 1 will benefit all Minnesotans by cutting income tax rates in all brackets," said Jacobson. "The people of Minnesota are over-taxed, as evidenced by many years of consecutive budget surpluses.

While residents of Vadnais Heights and Shoreview looked on, Representative Jacobson testified before the House Tax Committee about the benefits of an across the board tax cut. In his testimony, Jacobson referenced a recent Minnesota Business Partnership survey of top executives who were offered jobs in Minnesota, but turned them down. "The top two reasons these executives turned down jobs in Minnesota were the weather and taxes. We can't do anything about the weather in the Tax Committee, but we can certainly do something about taxes," Jacobson said.

House File 1 would cut income tax rates in all three income brackets: one-half percent in the lowest income bracket, three-quarters percent in the middle income bracket, and one-half percent in the upper income bracket. Jacobson is also an author of various other legislation relating to taxation including: a rebate of the state's surplus; a repeal of Minnesota's so-called "sick tax"; a repeal of Minnesota's capital gains tax; and, a proposed constitutional amendment to require any tax increases to be approved by three-fifths of the Minnesota Legislature.

Jacobson is in his first term as a legislator, representing House District 53B which includes the communities of Gem Lake, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake, and White Bear Township. He serves on the House Health & Human Services Policy Committee as well as the full Tax Committee and Sales & Income Tax Division of the Tax Committee.
