Local Government

Session Wrap-up

For a complete look at new laws from the 2001 legislative session, including those affecting local government, the House Public Information Office has published a complete summary. Click here for New Laws 2001.

Local government proposals become law: A bill doesn't have to be included in an omnibus funding measure to become law. Several provisions relating to specific cities, towns, and counties are new laws on their own, including laws changing county elected positions to appointed positions.

Stories from 2001

Code uniformity (May 14): In an effort to stimulate the construction of more affordable housing, the House passed a bill that would provide more standardization of government regulatory fees.
Position change (May 10): The House passed a bill that would allow two counties to change some elected positions to appointed positions.
Castration law may be cut (Feb. 8): The House Local Government and Metropolitan Affairs Committee approved a bill that might cause a collective sigh of relief from both the head of town boards throughout the state and certain roaming animals.
Housing for helping (Jan. 25): Getting a day job in the city of Mahtomedi might be a tad more attractive to potential paramedic candidates thanks to a bill heard by the House Local Government and Metropolitan Affairs Committee.
