MINUTES


Representative Carlos Mariani, Chair of the K-12 Education Policy & Oversight Committee, unofficially called the twelfth meeting to order at 8:33 AM on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in the basement hearing room of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll:

A quorum was not present.

Mr. John Melick, Director of Educator Licensing, Minnesota Department of Education, presented the Governor’s State of Minnesota Mid-Career Alternative Route to Teaching (SMART) proposal

Questions and discussion followed.

Chair Mariani officially called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM. A quorum was present.

Rep. Doepke moved that the minutes of February 10, 2009 be adopted. THE MOTION PREVAILED. THE MINUTES WERE ADOPTED.

Ms. Karen Balmer, Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Teaching, presented an overview of existing alternative routes to licensure.

Mr. Daniel Sellers, Executive Director of Teach for America, Twin Cities, and Ms. Norah Barrett, Site Manager of St. Paul Teaching Fellows, presented new or existing alternative routes to licensure.

Questions and discussion followed.

Dr. Mary Bents, Association Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, presented the Minnesota Association of Colleges of Teacher Education’s position on alternative routes to licensure.

Ms. Jan Alswager, Education Minnesota, presented Education Minnesota’s response to the Governor’s SMART proposal.

Questions and discussion followed.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:05 AM.
