MINUTES

Representative Cheryl Youakim, Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 9:47 A.M. on, Tuesday, February 25, 2020, in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Informational Presentation on Trauma-Informed Schools

Intermediate School District 287 gave a presentation on the work that they are doing to train their teachers and staff in trauma-informed practices. Testifiers for this presentation included:
Dr. Sandra Lewandowski, Superintendent of IMD 287 in Plymouth;
Steve Graner, Project Director of the ChildTrauma Academy;
Tonya Allen, Principal of North Education Center in New Hope.

The testifiers took questions from members.


Book Discussion on The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Dr. Bruce Perry

A quorum was present at 10:56 A.M.


HF 3556 (Moran) Trauma-informed school incentive aid funding provided, and money appropriated.

Representative Moran introduced HF 3556.

Lynn Thompson, a 5th grade teacher, and Jake Laurent, Dean of Students, from Piedmont Elementary in the Duluth School District, testified in support of the bill.

Johnathan Gavin, Behavior Intervention Specialist, and Jenna Willemarck, the school social worker, from Richardson Elementary in the North St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale School District, testified in support of the bill.

Superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins from Robbinsdale Area School District testified in support of the bill.

Testifiers took member questions on the bill.

Representative Kunesh-Podein moved that the minutes of February 19, 2020 be adopted. THE MOTION PREVAILED.


The meeting was adjourned at 11:21 A.M.
