NEWS RELEASE
REP. HOWES PURCHASES FIRST LIFETIME FISHING LICENSE

Representative Larry Howes saw one of his legislative efforts come to fruition this week when he purchased the first lifetime fishing licenses from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Howes purchased the license for his two and a half-year-old grandson, Beau. The lifetime hunting and fishing licenses program was made possible by legislation authored by Representative Howes in 2000.

"It's always nice to see a bill turn into reality," Howes said, "but it's especially nice when it means that I can buy my grandson a gift that will last his entire life."

Howes purchased the license during the DNR's kickoff of their new lifetime hunting and fishing licensing program. Under the program, residents can purchase a license for hunting, fishing or both that does not ever need renewing.

"Buying a lifetime license is a great investment in Minnesota's natural resources," Howes said, but more than that, it's also a great investment in a wonderful family activity. My grandson, Beau will be able to go fishing with his father or me any time and hopefully, he'll grow up and share our love for the sport and for conserving Minnesota's natural resources."

The lifetime fish and game license is available for purchase as of March 1 for Minnesota residents. Non-resident hunters and anglers are also eligible but they will have to wait until 2002.

Lifetime license costs vary by type and ages. Prices for lifetime angling licenses are $227 for age 3 and under, $300 for ages 4-15, $383 for ages 16-50, and $203 for those 51 years and older. The same categories of lifetime small game hunting licenses would go for $217, $290, $363 and $213.

The lifetime licenses are only issued through the DNR's licensing bureau in St. Paul. You can obtain an application by writing the DNR Information Center, 500 Lafayette Rd., St. Paul, MN
