Overlimit violation bill advances

(January 19, 2001) A bill to establish penalties for gross overlimit violations of Minnesota's fish and game laws was presented to the House Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee.

The intent of HF94, is to provide a strong deterrent to those who intentionally defy current fish and game laws.

The bill would set restitution values for fish, wildlife, and plants taken in violation of state law. It would allow enforcement officers to arrest offenders and to seize licenses and property used in committing the violation, including boats, motors, and trailers. In addition, it would put teeth into the law by providing three degrees of criminal penalties for those who commit violations.

Based on a recommendation by Rep. Dennis Ozment (R-Rosemount) members referred the bill to the House Crime Prevention Committee for advisement with the request that it be returned to their committee.
