BudgetSession Wrap-upWhen lawmakers adjourned the 2001 session the Department of Finance's revenue forecast
projected a $924 million budget surplus leftover from the 2000-2001 biennium.
By the time the special session adjourned establishing the state's budget for the next biennium
the slowing economy reduced the 2000-2001 surplus to $791 million.
For the third consecutive year the Legislature approved a tax bill that provided most taxpayers with
a sales tax based rebate. The checks for this year's rebate were expected to be mailed in the fall.
