Extending unemployment benefits

(March 11, 2002) Farmland Food Company won the House Jobs and Economic Development Finance Committee's approval March 8 for extra unemployment benefits in the committee's omnibus bill (HF3648).

Under HF2636, which was included in the omnibus bill, the Albert Lea company's former employees would receive a maximum of 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to collect within two years, provided the applicant was enrolled in a training program.

Other proposals for additional unemployment benefits were denied. They include Fingerhut Corporation, Inc., airline and related industries, school contract employees, including food service workers and bus drivers, and the 3M, Inc., Eastside St. Paul plant.
