TransportationPlanning ahead(February 22, 2002) The first consumer models of a new mode of transportation just went up for auction
online, but state legislators are preparing for what could be a very popular way to get around.
The Segway Human Transporter, sort of a cross between a scooter and a vehicle, is described on the
company's Web site as a "self-balancing, electric-powered personal transportation machine."
Although they are now too expensive for most consumers, the price will likely drop and the machines
may start showing up in the state within a few years and should be regulated, the House Transportation
Policy Committee decided Feb. 21.
HF2882,
sponsored by Rep. Tom Workman (R-Chanhassen), would limit use of the Segway and other devices to
sidewalks and bike paths, and would limit the speed to 15 mph.
The bill now goes to the House floor.
