HealthWIC fundingAmong the officials testifying before the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee Jan 16 were representatives of the state’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. They and a number of testifiers said a budget reduction plan discussed in the committee misunderstands the nature of the WIC funding being recommended for this year's cuts. Titled as “administrative,” the funds actually go towards providing direct clinical services to low-income women and children, including blood tests and nutritional training. Some of the testifiers warned that the $3.5 million in cuts would force as many as one-third of WIC clients away from the program. The committee is scheduled to vote on the total package of $38.9 million in health and human services funding cuts early next week. View the archive from the committee hearing.
