Health

Obtaining prescription drugs

A bill that would make it easier for some low-income Minnesotans to obtain prescription drugs was approved by the House Health and Human Services Policy Committee Feb. 12.

Sponsored by Rep. Fran Bradley (R-Rochester), HF5 would create a prescription drug benefit program for Minnesota residents who have incomes less than 250 percent of federal poverty guidelines and do not have prescription drug benefits under any other private health plan or government program.

Bradley testified that the program would not cost the state any money -- beyond an estimated $6.5 million start-up cost -- because drug companies themselves would fund it.

Under the bill, drug manufacturers would be required to provide participants in the new program with the same drug discounts currently given under the state's Medical Assistance program. Medical Assistance is only available to people with incomes at or below federal poverty guidelines.

The bill now moves on to the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee.
