1.1 A house resolution 1.2 commemorating the life and work of Harold Stassen. 1.3 1.4 WHEREAS, Harold Edward Stassen was born on April 13, 1907, 1.5 in West St. Paul, and graduated from Humboldt High School, the 1.6 University of Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota Law 1.7 School; and 1.8 WHEREAS, at the age of 23, he was elected Dakota County 1.9 attorney, holding that office until 1938 while also serving as 1.10 president of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association and the 1.11 Young Republicans League; and 1.12 WHEREAS, in 1938, at the age of 31, he was elected Governor 1.13 of Minnesota, the youngest governor in United States history, 1.14 and as governor he promoted civil service reform and strategies 1.15 for resolving labor-management disputes; and 1.16 WHEREAS, in 1940, he delivered the keynote address at the 1.17 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia; and 1.18 WHEREAS, having served two terms as governor, he resigned 1.19 his position in 1943 to go on active military duty during World 1.20 War II and served with distinction in the South Pacific; and 1.21 WHEREAS, as a United States delegate to the founding 1.22 conference of the United Nations in San Francisco, he was a 1.23 signer of the original United Nations charter; and 1.24 WHEREAS, he served in the cabinet of President Dwight D. 2.1 Eisenhower; and 2.2 WHEREAS, his many campaigns for president served to provoke 2.3 thought among voters, to provide a forum for ideas, and finally 2.4 to teach us the meaning of persistence and determination; and 2.5 WHEREAS, Harold Stassen passed away on March 4, 2001; NOW, 2.6 THEREFORE, 2.7 BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State 2.8 of Minnesota that it mourns the passing of Harold Edward Stassen 2.9 and holds his life and work in loving memory. It extends 2.10 condolences to his son and daughter, his seven grandchildren, 2.11 and his four great-grandchildren, and to all those who knew him. 2.12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the House of 2.13 Representatives is directed to prepare an enrolled copy of this 2.14 resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the 2.15 Speaker, and transmit it to the family of Harold Stassen.
