05-4140 1.1 A house resolution 1.2 recognizing Minnesota's unique role in 75 years of 1.3 Independent Community Banking. 1.4 1.5 WHEREAS, on May 9, 1930, a group of Minnesota community 1.6 bankers held their first official association meeting in 1.7 Glenwood, Minnesota, gathering to discuss how to respond to 1.8 challenges such as the recent stock market crash, a struggling 1.9 national economy, a rash of bank foreclosures, and the rapid 1.10 growth of chain banks; and 1.11 WHEREAS, from this first meeting a small state association 1.12 grew into a national association, the Independent Community 1.13 Bankers of America (ICBA), which today still maintains a 1.14 Minnesota office located in Sauk Centre; and 1.15 WHEREAS, in 1962, Minnesota bankers returned to their 1.16 original mission and established the Independent Community 1.17 Bankers of Minnesota (ICBM), to assume state duties for the 1.18 national association; and 1.19 WHEREAS, independent community banks continue to serve a 1.20 vital role in our state and national economies by reinvesting 1.21 deposits into the communities they serve in the form of 1.22 agricultural, educational, small business, real estate, and 1.23 consumer loans; and 1.24 WHEREAS, independent community bankers practice the 2.1 community aspect of community banking by welcoming leadership 2.2 roles in their community to respond to local needs in areas such 2.3 as economic development, education, housing, and health care; 2.4 and 2.5 WHEREAS, the ICBM continues the tradition started 75 years 2.6 ago of innovation and community concern as they partner for a 2.7 second year with the Pohlad Family Foundation to offer T.E.A.M. 2.8 (Training, Education, and Mentoring) Future Bankers, a unique 2.9 summer youth jobs program that introduces students to community 2.10 banking and invests in the futures of the next generation of 2.11 community bankers; and 2.12 WHEREAS, the ICBM also launched a separate nonprofit in 2.13 2004 called Debate Minnesota, a unique effort to bring civility 2.14 back to Minnesota politics by hosting a series of roundtable 2.15 debates that focus on public policy issues; and 2.16 WHEREAS, Minnesota has a unique national role in the 2.17 75-year history of independent, community banking; and 2.18 WHEREAS, the Honorable Tim Pawlenty has proclaimed Monday, 2.19 May 9, 2005, as Independent Community Bankers of Minnesota Day; 2.20 NOW, THEREFORE, 2.21 BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State 2.22 of Minnesota that it commends independent community bankers for 2.23 their unique role in our state's history and contributions to 2.24 our state's communities. 2.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chief Clerk of the House of 2.26 Representatives is directed to prepare an enrolled copy of this 2.27 resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the 2.28 Speaker, and transmit it to the offices of the Independent 2.29 Community Bankers of Minnesota.
