1.1A house resolution
1.2expressing the sense of the House of Representatives relating to China's treatment
1.3of Tibet.
1.4WHEREAS, Communist China invaded Tibet in 1951 and occupies it today; and
1.5WHEREAS, the Communist Chinese occupation forced the Dalai Lama into exile in
1.61959; and
1.7WHEREAS, the Communist Chinese "Cultural Revolution" of 1966 resulted in the further
1.8oppression of Tibetans by the destruction of religious sites and a prohibition of the use of the
1.9Tibetan language; and
1.10WHEREAS, popular democratic uprisings in 1987 and 1989 resulted in a ruthless military
1.11response by the Chinese; and
1.12WHEREAS, China, for nearly 50 years, has executed an oppressive occupation that
1.13has resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent people and the indefinite incarceration of
1.14thousands more; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.15BE IT RESOLVED that it is the sense of the House of Representatives of the State of
1.16Minnesota that the state of Minnesota should adopt policies that support the inherent right of the
1.17people of Tibet to exercise the right of self-determination.
1.18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it is the sense of the House that the United States
1.19Olympic team should boycott the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing,
1.20China.
