Gov. Tim Walz announced Tuesday that Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) and her husband, Mark, will lie in state on Friday. They will be joined by their Golden Retriever, Gilbert.

The Capitol Rotunda will be available for the public to pay their respects from noon to 5 p.m.

Hortman will be the first woman and one of fewer than 20 Minnesotans to lie in state.

A private funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A livestream will be available on the Department of Public Safety’s YouTube channel.

The Hortmans were fatally shot in their home June 14. Sen. John Hoffman (DFL-Champlin) and his wife, Yvette, were also shot in their home in a related attack.
