Rep. Igo Statement on Committee Vote for Nuclear Study

St. Paul, MN  Rep. Igo released the following statement after the House Energy Committee’s vote on HF4703, legislation he authored to evaluate nuclear energy options in Minnesota. The bill was laid over this afternoon.

A comparable Senate bill, SF1435, has bipartisan authorship and, although it is laid over in the Senate Energy Committee, that committee has previously advanced similar legislation to study nuclear energy twice.

Minnesota’s carbon-free energy goals, established in 2023, make it critical to explore all viable energy sources, including nuclear, to reliably achieve these targets.

“HF4703 reflects a thoughtful, collaborative effort with labor organizations, the Prairie Island Indian Community, energy industry partners, local leaders, and environmental and economic stakeholders,” said Rep. Igo. “It is essential that this work be done carefully and responsibly. Nuclear energy has the potential to lower costs, create economic opportunities, and strengthen Minnesota’s energy future. This bill is designed to advance a study that will help identify the most effective path forward. Our goal is reliable, affordable, and clean energy, ensuring decisions are guided by data, expertise, and the needs of Minnesota families and businesses.”
