House OKs modifications to renters’ rights in common interest communities

The House passed a bill Tuesday that would clarify the rights of residents in common interest communities, specifically like those in St. Paul’s Pioneer Endicott Building, which was converted to sell space to the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
HF3552 would make narrow changes to renters’ rights under the Minnesota Common Interest Ownership Act, which governs planned communities like condominiums, conversion properties and cooperatives. The bill would also amend the definitions of a “conversion property” and “residential use” for multi-family rentals.

Following the 124-0 vote, the bill sponsored by Rep. Dennis Smith (R-Maple Grove), HF3552 goes to the Senate where Sen. Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove) is the sponsor.
Smith told the House the bill is bipartisan, it has no opposition and passed easily through the committee process.
