RELEASE: Rep. Ecklund joins call for additional accountability for developers and contractors

Tuesday, October 11, 2022

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Today, worker advocates held a news conference at the Minnesota State Capitol calling for increased accountability for developers and contractors following reports of sexual assault at the Viking Lakes development in Eagan. Earlier this year, nearly three dozen workers filed wage theft complaints against two contractors working on the project.

Rep. Rob Ecklund (DFL – International Falls), chair of the House Labor, Industry, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, issued the following statement:

“A worker experiencing sexual assault at a major development – a project undertaken by a prominent, trusted family in Minnesota – is reprehensible. Meanwhile, a subcontractor dismissing the victim’s claims is an unacceptable response to a situation where trust, listening, and support are paramount. All workers deserve to be safe and supported at work. They also deserve to be compensated fairly, and the subcontractor has fallen short of this expectation, too. It’s clear developers and contractors at significant developments need greater scrutiny and accountability, and I look forward to advancing this important conversation with labor, business, and regulatory officials at the Capitol.”
