May 8, 2026 Huge Wins This Week at the State CapitolFriends and neighbors, I am happy to inform you that House Republicans have secured several huge wins for Minnesotans this week at the State Capitol. Here is a brief overview of bills that passed the House Floor: - Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Bill: Will provide a tool to combat Minnesota's fraud epidemic through a truly independent agency to investigate and prosecute fraud. The Office of the Inspector General will operate outside the authority of the Governor and the Attorney General, so the public can be assured that their tax dollars are being safeguarded by an apolitical entity. The final vote on this bill was 127-5.
- Work Requirements for Welfare: Implements strict, expanded work requirements for able-bodied adults aged 18–64 without dependents under 14 who use Medicaid programs. Now they must work, volunteer, or participate in training for at least 80 hours per month (roughly 20 hours per week) to avoid a three-month time limit on benefits. Able-bodied adults who choose not to work should not be subsidized by those who do. This is a win for taxpayers and fiscal responsibility. The final vote on the bill was 69-63.
- School Funding Constitutional Amendment: Proposes a constitutional amendment (to be voted on in the upcoming general election) to update the way fund earnings are distributed from school trust lands. This would move Minnesota to a more beneficial formula that will help schools better plan for the future while preserving the long-term strength of the fund itself. This will significantly increase annual funding for school districts from our public lands without raising taxes. The final vote on the bill was 133-0.
We are one week away from the end of the 2026 Legislative Session and issues are very dynamic. I will continue to update you as matters progress. Wishing you a great weekend! |
