DFL Lawmakers Thank MPCA for Beginning Process to Revoke Northern Iron Permit

Thursday, June 5, 2025

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Yesterday, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) announced it has taken the first steps to revoke Northern Iron’s operating permit. This action was only taken because Northern Iron has repeatedly failed to provide MPCA with information required under state law to write a permit. These laws are integral to protecting human health and the environment.

Senate Environment, Climate and Legacy Chair Senator Foung Hawj (DFL - St. Paul), Representative Liz Lee (DFL - Saint Paul), and House Environment and Natural Resources Co-Chair Representative Peter Fischer (DFL - Maplewood) released the following statement:

“We are happy to see the MPCA start the process of taking final action against Northern Iron, which has failed to comply with basic state regulations. The MPCA is using its full authority to guarantee the health and safety of our community. Actions like these are more important than ever, as we witness the dismantling of the EPA by the Trump administration. Northern Iron has strung along the community and MPCA for too long and it’s time that they are held accountable for their actions. While this will still be a long and likely difficult process, we are prepared to continue pushing for a result that makes our community healthier.”
