House POCI Caucus Statement on Trump plan to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somali Minnesotans

Saturday, November 22, 2025

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota House People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus released the following statement:

“Last night, President Trump announced he was removing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Somali individuals who are in the U.S. due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Somalia. In his statement, the President peddled racist tropes about our vibrant Somali-Minnesotan population and threatened to remove them from the country. Because the vast majority of these neighbors are citizens, the President’s order on social media won’t do what he wants. However, it will stoke racism against our neighbors and endanger their safety. We strongly condemn President Trump’s dangerous rhetoric, which we know can put lives at risk.

“At a moment like this, leaders should calm tensions, not flame them. We should be protecting families, not spreading fear. The Somali-Minnesotan community will continue to be a welcome and wonderful part of our state. To everyone in our community who feels afraid or targeted tonight: You belong here. You are valued. And we stand with you.”
