Rep. Tom Sexton Statement on Minnesota Supreme Court Ruling in Powerlifting Case
St. Paul, MN — Rep. Tom Sexton, R-Waseca, released the following statement regarding the Minnesota Supreme Court’s decision announced this morning:
“Today’s ruling is deeply disappointing for the many young women who have worked hard to earn fair competition in their sports. Title IX was created to give girls equal opportunities, and that promise is being undermined when biological males are allowed to compete in girls’ divisions. This is about protecting fairness, safety, and the integrity of women’s athletics with a level playing field. I stand ready to support legislation that ensures girls’ sports remain for girls when the Legislature reconvenes next session.”
House Republicans have introduced legislation, including House File 12 and House File 1233, to clearly define participation standards in school athletics. These bills were blocked earlier this year but remain active and ready for consideration when the House returns on February 17, 2026.
