AGRICULTURE, RURAL ECONOMIES AND VETERANS AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

MINUTES



Representative Otremba, Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 8:03 A.M. on, February 7, 2007, in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Members present:

A quorum was present.


Rep. Morrow moved approval of the minutes from February 5, 2007.
THE MOTION PREVAILED. THE MINUTES WERE APPROVED.

The committee heard an overview on Agriculture Education.

Ms. Dacia (Schoenfeld) Hinkhouse, Executive Assistant, and Mr. Tom Appel, President, Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators presented an overview of the MAAE.

Mr. Joel Larson, Academic Standards and High School Improvement Division, Minnesota Department of Education explained the Natural Resource Science curriculum.

Ms. Julie Tesch, Executive Director for Minnesota, Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council provided the committee an overview of MAELC, how they are funded and their accomplishments.

Mr. Jerry Schoenfeld, Executive Director, Minnesota Association of Agricultural Educators explained what Agriculture Education is and the three core components.

Mr. Daniel Smith, Supervisor of Adult and Career Education, Minnesota Department of Education, spoke on licensure programs.

Mr. Jim Boerboom, Assistant Commissioner, Minnesota Department of Agriculture explained the Ag in the Classroom program and how it was developed to promote understanding and awareness of the importance of agriculture. Mr. Boerboom took questions from members of the committee.

Chair Otremba referred House File 284 (Ruth) Special assessment deferments authorized for members of the armed forces, and grants from the Support Our Troops account authorized for eligible individuals to pay special assessments; to the Division of Veteran Affairs.
