E-12 EDUCATION COMMITTEE

MINUTES


Representative Carlos Mariani, Chair of the E-12 Education Committee, called the twenty-fourth meeting to order at 8:12 AM on Thursday, February 14, 2008, in the Basement hearing room of the State Office Building.


The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll:

A quorum was present.

Chair Mariani welcomed back the members of the committee and the audience.

Rep. Dittrich moved the minutes for March 23, 2007 and May 10, 2007, and Jan. 25, 2008. THE MOTION PREVAILED. THE MINUTES WERE ADOPTED.

Reports from interim working groups:

Rep. Brynaert gave a summary of the work of the Accountability work group, and presented the group's recommendations

Rep. Bly gave a summary of the work of the Alternative Schools work group and presented the group's recommendations

Rep. Dittrich gave a summary of the work of the High School Redesign work group and presented the group's recommendations.


HF 2627 (Bly)— A bill for an act relating to education; modifying teaching employment for early childhood education programs; amending Minnestoa Statutes 2007 Supplement, section 124D.13, subdivision 11.

Rep. Dittrich moved that HF 2627 be recommended to pass and be placed on the General Register.

Testifying on behalf of HF 2617 were:

Karen Manske, Coordinator, Chisago Lakes Family Center

Rep. Dittrich moved the H2617A4 amendment. THE MOTION PREVAILED. THE AMENDMENT WAS ADOPTED.

Testifying with clarification about the background of HF 2617 was:

Karen Balmer, Executive Director, Minnesota Board of Teaching.

Questions and discussion followed.

Rep. Dittrich renewed her motion that HF 2617, as amended, be recommended to pass and be placed on the General Register. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Presentating SciMathMn Policymakers Briefing: "A Decade of Action: Recommendation for STEM Education" was Dr. Rodger Bybee, Director Emeritus of BCSC and Nancy Nutting, Executive Director, SciMathMn.
Handouts: PowerPoint "A Decade of Action: Sustaining Global Competitiveness—Recommendations for STEM Education" and "A Decade of Action—Sustaining Global Competitiveness: A Synthesis of Recommendations for a 21st Century Workforce"

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 AM.
