MINUTES


Representative Mary Murphy, Chair, called the fourth meeting to order at 4:31 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2009 in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Members excused:

Chair Murphy called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m.

A quorum was present.

Representative Rukavina was present at the hearing.

Chair Murphy asked Representative Lillie and Representative Kahn to share their stories about art pieces created under the Works Progress Administration.

Professor Hy Berman of Minneapolis testified to the circumstances in America during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s election and the problems faced by him during the Great Depression.

Pam Brunfelt of Britt, instructor of History and Political Science at Vermillion Community College, testified to the history of New Deal programs in Minnesota.

Professor Lary May of Minneapolis testified to the history of arts and cultural industries during the Great Depression.

Professor Annette Atkins of Saint Joseph testified to the creation of projects and infrastructure in Minnesota in the 1930s.

Dr. Berman, Ms. Brunfelt, Dr. May and Dr. Atkins answered questions from the committee.

David Kelliher of Saint Paul, on behalf of the Minnesota Historical Society, answered questions from the committee.

Representative Morgan moved that the minutes of January 21, 2009 be adopted
