MINUTES

Representative Mullery, Chair of Committee on Early Childhood and Youth Development Policy, called the meeting to order at 4:02 PM Tuesday, January 15, 2013 in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

A quorum was present.

Chair Mullery asked members and staff to introduce themselves to the committee.

Sue Abderholden, Executive Director of NAMI, provided an introduction for the following speakers presenting on various children's mental health issues.

Dr. Glenace Edwall, Director of Children's Mental Health at Minnesota Dept. of Human Services, provided an overview of children's mental health needs and Minnesota's Children's Mental Health System.

Prof. Megan Gunnar, University of Minnesota, provided an overview of how early life stress shapes the development of future mental and physical health.

Dr. Willie Garrett, Child and Adolescent Psychologist, provided an overview of mental health care disparities for children of various racial and socio-economic backgrounds in the state of Minnesota.

Dr. Charlene Myklebust, Intermediate Dist. 287, provided an overview of children's mental health issues in the school system and discussed recommendations for change.

Dr. Mark Sander, Mental Health Coordinator for Minneapolis Public Schools, provided an overview of work in Minneapolis and Hennepin County regarding school-linked mental health services and discussed issues relating to sustaining and expanding school-linked mental health services in the state of Minnesota.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:42 PM.
