MINUTES

Representative Hackbarth, Chair of the Mining and Outdoor Recreation Policy Committee, called the eighth meeting to order at 2:54 P.M. on Wednesday, February 11 2015, in Room 10 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Representative Hackbarth began the meeting at 2:48 P.M. A quorum was NOT present.

Paul Telander, Wildlife Section Chief of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, gave an overview of Minnesota’s deer population and management system.

A quorum was present at 2:50 P.M. The meeting was called to order at 2:54 P.M.

Representative Anderson moved to approve the minutes of February 10, 2015. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Steve Merchant, Wildlife Population and Regulation Program Manager of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, presented an in-depth look at Minnesota’s deer population and management system and took questions from committee members.

The following people testified for the deer population informational hearing and took questions from committee members:

Brooks Johnson, President of Minnesota Bowhunters Inc., spoke to the current “deer experience” for hunters in Minnesota and called for an audit of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Ted Wawrzyniak, Founder of the Minnesota Whitetail Alliance, presented on deer management and antler point restrictions.

Collin Johnson, Bluffland Whitetails Association, gave an overview of Bluffland Whitetails Association’s current deer management program.

Craig Engwall, Executive Director of the Minnesota Deer Hunters’ Association, spoke to the Minnesota Deer Hunter’s Association’s deer management recommendations to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:28 P.M.
