MINUTES

Representative Sondra Erickson, Chair of the Education Innovation Policy Committee, called the meeting to order at 8:15 AM on February 7, 2017, in room 10 of the State Office Building. A quorum was present.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Representative Erickson noted a technical correction in the minutes from February 2, 2017.

Representative Kunesh-Podein moved the minutes from February 2, 2017, be approved. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

HF731 (Erickson): Civics testing added to required curriculum.

Representative Erickson introduced and provided testimony on HF731.

Taylor Vitsen, New Prague High School and Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program, gave testimony on her high school experience with civics curriculum.

Adosh Unni, Director of Government Relations with Minnesota Department of Education, testified on Department of Education’s in regards to the curriculum surrounding civics testing standards.

Representative Erickson moved to lay over HF731 for possible inclusion in an omnibus bill. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

HF574 (Urdahl): Refundable credit for attaining a master's degree in a teacher's licensure field provided.

Representative Urdahl moved to re-refer HF574 to the Committee on Education Finance.

Representative Urdahl moved the A1 authors’ amendment. THE MOTION PREVAILED, THE AMENDMENT WAS ADOPTED.

Representative Urdahl introduced HF574 as amended and stood for questions.

Tim Strom, House Non-Partisan Research, testified about clarifying language in HF574.

Representative Erickson renewed the motion to re-refer HF574 as amended, to the Committee on Education Finance. THE MOTION PREVAILED.



HF602 (Anderson, S.): Education expense credit and deduction applied to expenditures for prekindergarten expenses.

Representative Erickson moved to re-refer HF602 to the Committee on Education Finance.

Representative Anderson introduced HF602 and stood for questions.

Representative Erickson renewed the motion to re-refer HF602 to the Committee on Education Finance. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

The meeting adjourned at 9:11 AM.
