MINUTES



Representative Tom Rukavina, Chair of the Higher Education and Workforce Development Finance and Policy Division, called the meeting to order at 1:05 P.M. on Thursday,
January 22, 2009, in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Chair Rukavina welcomed Robert Bruininks, President, University of Minnesota and Richard Pfutzenreuter, Vice President of Finance, University of Minnesota and invited them to begin their presentation.

Robert Bruininks, President, University of Minnesota, introduced himself and began the fiscal presentation on the University of Minnesota. President Bruininks introduced Regent Steve Hunter, Regent Linda Cohen and Regent John Frobenius.

President Bruininks continued his presentation.

President Bruininks also introduced Chancellor Kathryn Martin from the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus, Chancellor Steven Lehmkuhle from the University of Minnesota Rochester Campus, Chancellor Chuck Casey from the University of Minnesota Crookston Campus, and Vice Chancellor Cheryl Constant from the University of Minnesota Morris Campus.

President Bruininks continued his presentation. Handouts were provided.

Richard Pfutzenreuter, Vice President of Finance, University of Minnesota, introduced himself and assisted in the presentation.

Chair Rukavina asked President Bruininks to discuss what he sees as real solutions to the budget problems.

President Bruininks continued his presentation. President Bruininks recognized Regent Patricia Simmons presence in the audience also. President Bruininks continued his presentation and askd for flexibility to manage the challenges, minimize the burden on students, and protect the jobs of staff and employees.

Chair Rukavina asked President Bruininks to have the campus Chancellors to come to the table and join him, to say a few words on behalf of their campuses.

Kathryn Martin, Chancellor, University of Minnesota Duluth, introduced herself and shared her comments.

Cheryl Constant, Vice Chancellor, University of Minnesota Morris, introduced herself and shared her comments.

Chuck Casey, Chancellor, University of Minnesota Crookston, introduced himself and shared his comments.

Stephen Lehmkuhle, Chancellor, University of Minnesota Rochester, introduced himself and shared his comments.

Chair Rukavina invited President Bruininks and Vice President Pfutzenreuter back to the table for questions.

Representative Mahoney moved that the minutes of January 20, 2009 be adopted. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Chair Rukavina made some final comments and thanked President Bruininks, Vice President Pfutzenreuter, and the Chancellors for their presentations and said that everyone would need to work together to look over all budgets to find solutions to the deficit.
