STATE OF MINNESOTA THIRTY-SEVENTH MEETING
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES EIGHTY-SIXTH SESSION
K-12 EDUCATION POLICY & OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
Representative Carlos Mariani, Chair of the K-12 Education Policy & Oversight Committee, called the thirty-seventh meeting to order at 1:37 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in the Main Auditorium of the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, MN.

A quorum was present.
Chair Mariani welcomed the members of the K-12 Education Policy Committee, the Senators of the E-12 Education Committee, members of the audience, and guest speakers to the hearing, and gave an overview of the day’s agenda.
The members of the House K-12 Education Policy& Oversight Committee and Senate E-12 Education Committee introduced themselves and the school districts they represent.
Chair Mariani introduced Mr. Geoffrey Canada to the committee, and welcomed him to the committee.
Mr. Geoffrey Canada, Harlem Children’s Zone, testified about closing academic disparities and reforming education in the United State into world-leading schools.
Mr. Canada fielded questions from members.
Testifying with reaction to Mr. Canada’s testimony, as well as what Minnesota’s K-12, nonprofit, and community leaders are doing to integrate services and close disparities, were:
