MINUTES

Representative Kahn, Chair of the Legacy Committee, called the meeting to order at 2:17 P.M. on March 20, 2013 in Room 5 of the State Office Building.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Members excused:

Peter Pruett, Director of Zoo Operations, Lake Superior Zoo, explained their request for funding of the Forest Discovery Zone.

A quorum was present at 2:21 P.M.

Representative Hausman moved that the minutes of March 19, 2013 be approved. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Traci Warnberg-Lemm, Executive Director, Kids Voting and member of the Civic Education Coalition, emphasized the need for civic education and explained how the Coalition has used Legacy funds in the past.

Jennifer Bloom, Director, Learning Law and Democracy Foundation and member of the Civic Education Coalition, presented some highlights of the accomplishments made possible with Legacy funding and explained the Coalition's goals for the future.

Representative Susan Allen presented some background on her bill HF1535 which would fund the United Nations Association of MN's (UNA-MN) Global Classrooms program.

Robert Flaten, Ex-Officio (VP), UNA-MN, presented some background information on the program.

Fatema Kermalli Walji, Global Classrooms Program Coordinator, UNA-MN, gave an overview of how the program works and their desire to expand to other schools in the future.

Anna Schmiel, Student at Edina High School, explained how the Global Classrooms program has helped her and how it influenced her plans for the future.

Randi Markusen, Co-Chair, Global Classrooms Program, UNA-MN, explained that demand for the program is increasing and they need additional funding to expand to other schools.

Bob Austin, Member of Sportsmen for Change, stated that he thinks the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council has done an excellent job and he supports their recommendations.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:51 P.M.
