Legislative Update from Rep. Mike Freiberg

Neighbors,

We’re about a month into the 2026 legislative session, and things are moving quick.

Earlier this month, DFLers rolled out our goals and priorities for the 2026 legislative session. The price tag that comes with a normal, modest life has become far too high. Too many Minnesotans are struggling just to get by.

When basics become a luxury, it’s a clear sign that the system is broken. It shouldn’t be this difficult to get ahead. DFLers are focused on combatting the affordability crisis and bringing down costs so Minnesotans can:

  • Afford Health Care
  • Afford Child Care
  • Afford Housing
  • Afford Groceries
  • Afford Energy

It’s not rocket science to pass legislation to make life a little easier for Minnesotans, but it will take work from everyone in the House — including Republicans. Minnesotans are in the thick of an affordability crisis that is being exacerbated by the Trump Administration’s recklessness. If Minnesota Republicans are as serious about taking on the affordability crisis as we are, then getting things done should be a breeze.

Helping Minnesotans Afford Their Lives

Unsurprisingly, that has not been the case. Republicans have already voted against bills to make housing more affordable and send emergency rental assistance to families who are in dire need. Instead, they’ve taken votes to send public dollars to private schools and provide state resources to ICE.

Last week in the Elections Committee, we heard a bill that would prohibit cities from requiring HOAs on new developments in order to obtain a building permit. However, it would still allow cities to make sure that amenity maintenance plans are sufficient and not a burden on the city. You can hear me talk about this bill and everyone’s favorite riveting topic, stormwater ponds, here.

Puppy Day!

One of the greatest days at the Capitol is when the Animal Humane Society visits us – with puppies! Puppy Day always brings a burst of joy to the building, and this year was no different.

All 16 of the puppies we met are available for adoption (or will be soon) at the Golden Valley Animal Human Society! If you’re looking for a new addition, head to their website and get ready to be overloaded by cuteness.
