Hello Friends,
This week, the House Public Safety Committee heard my bill banning high-capacity magazines. This would prohibit magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and add another layer of safety in helping protect Minnesotans from gun violence. You can listen to my closing comments here.
It’s a proposal that builds off the work we did last term—passing extreme risk protection orders (red flag laws) and enhanced background checks that are currently saving lives. And it’s complemented by our package of gun violence prevention bills, including an assault weapons ban, safe storage requirements, and more.
In committee, we were joined by the students, parents, staff, and community of Annunciation Church and School, which in August experienced a horrifying shooting that killed two children, Harper and Fletcher, and injured dozens of others who are still living in recovery and fear.

The testimony from Annunciation members was incredibly powerful, but they aren’t the only ones calling for change. In fact, 79% of suburban Minnesotans support our proposals.
Sometimes, it seems like the only place these proposals are controversial is inside the Capitol halls. Despite support across the political divide, all the Republicans on the committee voted against both bills, blocking them from moving forward.
But this is not the end. I’ve been working since August’s shooting to craft a bill that is as easy as possible for my Republican colleagues to move to a ‘Yes’, and I’ll continue to have those conversations.
We must do better for our kids, families, and friends to prevent gun violence. And we’re not giving up.
