Legislative Update – Passing Bills to Prevent Fraud

Friday, May 8, 2026

Hello Friends,

We’re in the home stretch of the 2026 Legislative Session, and I’m focused every day on passing legislation to help Shakopee and Minnesota thrive.

Last night, I spoke in support of legislation modifying the state trooper compensation study. It's an issue I’ve been involved in since 2019, when trooper pay was falling behind that of other law enforcement officers.

Yesterday, we continued our work to ensure we’re paying our state troopers what they’re worth, so they can live, raise a family, and thrive in Minnesota. Thank you to all our state troopers, conservation officers, and staff at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension who make our state a safer place.

Fraud Prevention Bills Moving Forward

This session, DFLers introduced over a dozen bills to continue our work ensuring public funds are actually going to helping our neighbors, not lining the pockets of fraudsters.

Last night, we took a big step forward in that work—passing a bill to create an Independent Office of the Inspector General. When it comes to fighting fraud, there are no silver bullets, but this will make a big difference in preventing fraud in the first place rather than just investigating it after the fact.

It takes time to get things like this exactly right. Because of the time we took on this bill, I'm confident the Office will be able to prevent fraud on Day 1.

Another bill that’s heading to the House Floor would beef up one of the most effective Medicaid fraud-fighting forces in the country. That means more fraudsters in jail and more public funds going where they need to.

As my colleague Matt Norris noted, there’s s a 3-to-1 match of federal funds available to us once passed, meaning it’s essentially buy one fraud fighter, get three free. This is a smart investment in our Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Unit, and I’m looking forward to passing it off the House Floor.
