Legislative update

Friday, February 20, 2026

Dear Neighbor,

We are officially wrapping up week one of the 2026 Legislative Session. Just like last session, the House Chamber is tied 67-67 and any legislation passed out of committees or off the House floor must have bipartisan support. With everything that we have heard from residents this interim, our top legislative priority must be stopping the fraud.

How can we stop the fraud?

Stopping the fraud will take a varied approach, with both prevention and punishment/enforcement. One bill that House Republicans, along with both Senate Republicans and Democrats, have been working on since last session would establish an independent Office of the Inspector General. This office would work separately from the legislature and the executive branch. This would give the office the ability to work in an unbiased and nonpartisan manner, which is crucial for integrity and fairness. So far, House Democrats have stood in the way of this bill passing the House and heading to the Governor’s desk for signature. Time will tell how the bill will progress over the course of the session.

Other key priorities

Aside from stopping the fraud we have 5 other key priorities, which are as follows:

  • Raise standards, reduce mandates
  • Minnesota tax dollars for Minnesotans
  • Make Minnesota safe
  • Make Minnesota affordable
  • Make Minnesota competitive

These priorities will make Minnesota a better place to live, work, and do business. Right now, taxes are high and state rules and mandates are weighing on families and businesses. That makes it harder for people to get ahead and for companies to grow.

Thank you for your engagement and support as we enter this session. Please stay in touch and keep your eye out for further updates in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Jimmy
