House Republicans Release School Safety Agenda, Rep. Igo Comments

St. Paul, MN — House Republicans announced their school safety agenda today, outlining proposals to protect students in the classroom, expand access to mental health care, and hold violent offenders accountable. This proposal comes in the wake of the tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School, which has deeply affected the people of Minnesota. These policies are what is needed for stronger protections for students.

Rep. Igo commented on the goal of the legislation, stating: “Our kids are entitled to have safe schools where they can focus on learning, and families deserve peace of mind. This agenda delivers real solutions by strengthening school security, expanding mental health care, and making sure violent criminals are held accountable. Our communities can come together with these policies to heal our State.”

Key provisions of the agenda include:

• Expanding school safety funding to non-public schools

• Creating school security grants such as the SHIELD Act (HF 15)

• Allowing schools more flexibility to use funding for safety improvements

• Making School Resource Officers available to every school

• Repealing or amending restrictions on doctors’ ability to use their best medical judgment

• Boosting funding for mental health treatment beds

• Establishing mandatory minimum sentences for repeat gun criminals and straw purchasers
