Legislative Update - The 2026 Legislative Session

Dear Neighbors,

The 2026 Legislative Session began this week, and our first day back was dedicated to remembering what we had lost since we had last gathered in the Minnesota House.

Flowers for Melissa Hortman

Melissa Hortman, our Speaker, leader, friend and colleague, was killed in an act of political violence last June that also claimed her husband Mark and their dog Gilbert.

It felt right spending our first day back commemorating Melissa and her dedication to Minnesota. In the short time since her killing, there have been several dark days and weeks in our state, but Melissa would want us to get to work building a path to brighter days.

Despite a near-record number of special elections this interim, the Minnesota House remains in a tie, and the Minnesota Senate maintains a 1-seat DFL majority. This means that, much like last year, the only way we’re going to get anything done this session is by working together. Melissa taught us how to do that work.

There’s a lot to do this year. We must respond to damage federal agents have caused in our communities these last few months, and prepare Minnesota for the next instance of overreach from the federal government. We must ensure that state dollars are being used properly to support Minnesotans as intended, and put in safeguards against fraudsters. We need to pass a Capital Investment bill, and meaningfully invest in infrastructure throughout the state, including right here in our community.

One of those past infrastructure projects was the Mankato Wastewater Treatment Facility. Prior to the start of session, I was able to tour the ongoing construction of this facility that was funded by the 2023 Capital Investment Bill. As Vice Chair of the Capital Investment Committee, I’ll be working to deliver similar projects this session.

It’ll be important and difficult work, but it’s work worth doing.

Greater Mankato Growth

Before returning to St. Paul, I was able to attend the Greater Mankato Growth Pre-Session Forum last month, where I joined legislative colleagues and community leaders to provide some insight into this year’s session.

For my part, I provided an update on ICE’s harmful impact to our community, and reiterated my support for Paid Family and Medical Leave, Earned Sick and Safe Time, and the importance of state investments properly going towards their intended use.

It was a panel of diverse political viewpoints, and I was thankful for the discussion. KEYC covered the forum, and you can watch their story here

Constituent Corner

As I return to the State Capitol, always be sure to let me know when you find yourself in St. Paul fighting for the issues you care about too!

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with MSU Mankato’s Megan Cumming, who was here for the Ducks Unlimited Conservation Day on the Hill. We were able to discuss the challenges young adults face as they try to get into agriculture. Thanks for being one of my first constituent visits this year, Megan!

It was also Transportation Day on the Hill this week, and I got to spend time with Blue Earth County Commissioners Vance Stuehrenberg and Patty O'Connor, along with BEC Public Works Director Ryan Thilges came to advocate for funding for the Rapidan Dam and roads and bridges funding.
