Legislative Update - A Month Left of Session

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone that came out for last weekend’s Town Hall. We had a lot of great conversations on our work in the Minnesota Legislature, our community’s needs, and the issues that still require solutions in our remaining weeks of session.

We’re required to wrap up our work by Monday, May 18, and there are several crucial issues that simply can’t be pushed off until the next session:

  • Costs are out of control for Minnesotans, and we need to deliver on solutions that make life more affordable and fair in our state.
  • We need to provide support to the communities throughout the state that have been hit hard by Operation Metro Surge, which reportedly cost Minnesota thousands of jobs.
  • Students, parents, and communities are demanding action on gun violence prevention and safety solutions for our schools.
  • From HCMC to rural hospitals, federal policies and disinvestment has left Minnesota’s healthcare system scrambling, and we need to provide a lifeline.
  • Infrastructure is crumbling in communities across the state, including ours, and we need to pass a Capital Investment bill to fund these local jobs and projects. As DFL Vice Chair of the Capital Investment Committee, the majority of my time is currently being spent on this bill. The hope is we can get everyone at the negotiating table to work in good faith on an impactful bill this year.

This is just a snapshot of what we need to do before we leave this year, and I know each point is capable of having a bipartisan solution that can pass in these remaining weeks. It’s going to take all of us working together, but I am committed to that work.

At this point in the legislative process, the majority of committees are done meeting, and the bulk of our work has shifted to passing legislation off the House Floor. There still remains ample opportunity for the public to come and have their voice heard as we prepare for the home stretch of the 2026 Legislative Session.

Our neighbors are still making the drive up to St. Paul to advocate for the issues most important to them, and this week I was honored to meet with the folks at COPAL, Communities Organizing Latine Power and Action.

I also recently met with advocates from the Minnesota Heart Association, who were at the Capitol advocating for CPR training for coaches.

In these remaining weeks, it’s more important than ever to connect on the issues you care about - whether that’s attending our Town Hall or touching base at the State Capitol. Thank you to all of our neighbors that have been such incredible partners in fighting for the issues our community cares about.
