Legislative Update from Rep. Nathan Coulter

Friends and neighbors,

The legislature is back at it after a brief legislative break. If you observed one of the many holidays that come with the beginning of spring, I hope your celebration was filled with love, joy, and community.

My family celebrated Easter, but it felt much different this year. The Easter story begins with profound loss and injustice and ends with renewal and hope.

Bruce Springsteen at No Kings

We’ve faced a lot of loss over the past year. Minnesota has seemingly become ground zero of tragedy, with lives lost and families torn apart at the hands of a federal government seeking revenge on our state.

In a lot of ways, I’m still waiting for the renewal and hope to kick in — and I know you are, too. I caught a glimpse of it for a moment at last month's No Kings rally. Maybe it was the inspiring words of Senator Bernie Sanders and Joan Baez or being a bit star-struck by witnessing Bruce Springsteen deliver Minnesota’s new anthem of resistance, but the feeling of unity was palpable. I felt hope.

Renewal won’t come without work. We cannot sit on the sidelines and expect things to get better — we have to make them better. We have to stand strong in our values and reach for them because we know that we are on the right side of history, and I am supremely confident of where Minnesotans stand.

The happenings of the Minnesota House lately are just as metaphorical.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve watched House Republicans vote against bills to feed hungry Minnesotans, keep people facing crisis housed, protect our kids from gun violence, defend Minnesotans’ constitutional rights, and make life more affordable.

I’ve been absolutely astonished by the cognitive dissonance on the House Floor. I’ve heard outlandish claims from the other side — including how only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can stop gun violence, so we shouldn't even try. We heard in committee about how one of my colleagues is not worried about climate change because “it's not in the Bible.” I will never understand how Republicans so consistently use their faith to justify their inaction and cruelty. I’m not sure what church they’re learning this hatred from, but it certainly isn’t mine.

I am, as always, committed to doing the job that folks in Bloomington sent me here to do. In the coming weeks, I am hopeful that my work on college affordability, child care regulation modernization, and addressing hunger will bear fruit. As we head into the final stretch of the legislative session, please do not hesitate to reach out with what’s on your mind.
