Dear Neighbors,

The 2026 Legislative Session began this week. While our communities continue to struggle in the wake of the Trump administration’s Operation Metro Surge, our hearts were also heavy in the Minnesota House as we dedicated our first day to commemorating Melissa Hortman, our leader and colleague who was killed along with her husband Mark and their dog Gilbert in a political assassination last June.

These are incredibly trying times for our community and state, but I look to Melissa’s example to help chart a path forward. Working together, I know we can reach better days.

Strengthening Minnesota Against ICE

The Trump administration claims that ICE’s presence in our state is dwindling, but I’ll believe it when I see it. What I do know is I continue to receive regular calls from families all over that state that still fear for their lives.

ICE’s chaos has been far-reaching, impacting students’ ability to learn, businesses’ ability to operate, and our neighbors’ ability to peacefully live everyday life. Many are afraid to leave their homes, and as a result are struggling to make ends meet.

$50 Million Rental Assistance Proposal

While ICE and other federal agents have been rampaging through our communities, my colleagues and I in the DFL have been hard at work crafting legislative solutions. This week, we hit the ground running with bills to deliver rental assistance to impacted families and ban federal agents from our schools without a judicial warrant.

In the House’s Workforce, Labor, and Economic Development Committee, where I serve, we dedicated a hearing to learning more about how Operation Metro Surge has impacted our businesses. I spoke to the importance of lifting up our immigrant businesses throughout our state, which you can watch here.

With our tie in the House, we’re facing an uphill battle. In committee this week, Republicans blocked rental assistance and protections for our schools against ICE, but that’s not the end of our work - it’s only the beginning.

All session, I will be dedicated to delivering results for our community, and I look forward to working with you to lead Minnesota to brighter days.
