Capitol Newsletter from Rep. Mike Wiener

Friday, January 20, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been a busy week in St. Paul as I continue working hard to make sure that the values and priorities of you, your family, and our communities are heard loud and clear at the state legislature.

Yesterday, Democrats passed their number one priority, House File 1, off the House floor. The vote took place after a lengthy debate where members on both sides of the aisle spoke passionately about the issue.

As a pro-life legislator, I have made clear that I will always support legislation that puts the health and well-being of women and the unborn first. That’s why this bill was an easy “no” vote for me.

House File 1 is an extreme bill and does not reflect the values of Minnesotans. It allows abortions to take place at any time during a pregnancy—including up to the moment of birth. In fact, this bill puts Minnesota’s abortion policy on par with just a handful of other nations in the world including China and North Korea.

There were several attempts in committee and on the House floor to add amendments to the bill that would ban abortions in the third trimester. There were other amendments offered that would require second or third-trimester abortions to take place in a hospital or be performed by a licensed physician to guard against the complications that become much more common in later-term abortions. All of these reasonable amendments were voted down by Democrats.

Despite yesterday’s setback, our work is not done. This year, I plan on working on legislation that gives women options beyond abortion and provides them with the support they need to choose life.

If this issue is important to you, I encourage you to come down to the State Capitol on Sunday to participate in the annual March for Life.
