Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary
This Fourth of July, we mark 250 years since a small band of patriots declared to the world that liberty is not granted by government, but given to all by God.
As we celebrate this milestone, I’m reminded of General George Washington, the indispensable man God raised up at a critical hour in our nation’s history.
Washington’s life was marked by courage, sacrifice, and repeated deliverance. Long before he became our first president, he faced danger that by all earthly odds should have taken his life. At the Battle of the Monongahela, bullets tore through his coat and horses were shot from under him, yet Washington walked away unharmed. He later wrote that he had been protected “beyond all human probability or expectation.”
That was the man who would later lead a weary army through some of the darkest days of the Revolution. When the cause of independence seemed nearly lost, Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas night with cold, exhausted, poorly equipped men and struck a victory at Trenton that helped turn the tide of the war.
America was born through courage, sacrifice, and faith. Our founders pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor while appealing to “the protection of divine Providence.” They understood that freedom comes with responsibility, and that every generation must decide whether it will preserve what has been handed down.
Two hundred and fifty years later, that responsibility belongs to us.
May we be faithful stewards of the nation we’ve been given. May we teach our children to love what is good, defend what is true, and cherish the freedom secured by those who came before us.
As Washington once wrote, “You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.”
