Hello from the State Capitol,
Next week, legislation I’m co-authoring that would provide some accountability to convicted fraudsters will be heard in the House Taxes Committee.
The “Take It Back Act” (HF4950) would impose a 100% tax on state funds obtained through fraud, targeting individuals and organizations convicted of such offenses. This penalty would be applied in addition to any court-ordered restitution already required.
Under the current language, revenue collected from this tax would be directed into a proposed “Taxpayer Relief Account,” with the goal of easing the burden on taxpayers through reductions in income and property taxes.
The bill has support from 35 House authors, including a significant number of DFL members, so I am optimistic that it could move forward.
HOUSE APPROVES BILL TO ALLOW LONGER INVESTIGATIONS FOR FRAUD CRIMES
The statute of limitations for those who commit fraud would increase under legislation approved by the House recently. Currently at six years, the proposal would extend the statute to ten years in order to give investigators more time to uncover and charge those criminals who stole taxpayer funds.
By extending the prosecution window, the legislation strengthens accountability and helps safeguard resources intended for Minnesotans who rely on these programs. The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
YET ANOTHER ATTACK ON FARMERS
It seems like whenever the Democrat co-chair runs the meeting in our House ag committee, we are bound to hear legislation Democrats are promoting that can safely be labeled as anti-ag.
In this week’s slap in the face, legislation would require an environmental assessment worksheet to be completed for any new drainage ditch that would be created. This is a very onerous and unnecessary mandate that Democrats want farmers to face. Every ag group in attendance at the hearing spoke out against it.
REPUBLICANS WANT TO CUT YOUR TAXES, DEMOCRATS WANT TO RAISE THEM
After blowing through an $18 billion surplus two years ago, raising taxes by another $10 billion besides, and overseeing at least $9 billion in fraud, you’d think Democrats would tire of tax increase talk. But you’d be wrong.
House Republican are promoting numerous provisions this session that promote affordability and would allow you to keep more of what you earn, as you’ll see below.

In contrast, House Democrats are moving legislation to implement a “wealth” tax (which includes property like farmland), an unrealized capital gains tax, an annual tax on net worth, and also discussed quintupling your car tab fees.
HOUSE APPROVES OFFICER GARY SCHROEDER HIGHWAY DESIGNATION
This week, the Minnesota House approved my bill that would rename a portion of Highway 58 in Zumbrota after former city police officer Gary Schroeder. The popular retired officer suffered from in-the-line-of-duty PTSD and is no longer with us. The bill now heads to the Minnesota Senate for further debate.
