Legislative Update -

Dear Neighbors,

Earlier this week, I sent out a reminder to sign up for my upcoming virtual town hall. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing an update from the Capitol. It’s been another busy week at the Legislature as we work toward committee deadlines. I’m frustrated by my Republican colleagues’ unwillingness to collaborate in good faith on legislation that brings relief to Minnesotans who are facing dire impacts due to Operation Metro Surge. While the headlines have changed, the trauma and pain are real, and we need to act with urgency to address the multiplying needs of our neighbors.

We’ve heard from thousands of Minnesotans across the state who are facing housing instability. I proudly voted for the $40 million emergency rental assistance bill introduced by House Democrats to provide immediate relief to families in need. Unfortunately, Republicans voted against the bill at every opportunity, choosing to maintain the status quo.

We gave them another chance to stand with Minnesotans on the House floor, pleading the case of families forced to make impossible decisions—unmoved by the heartbreaking reality of our neighbors, they all still voted, ‘No.’

Watch the floor hearing here.

Community at the Capitol

I had a great time connecting with Suburban Community Channels to talk about the future of community television! We discussed how essential hyperlocal coverage is for keeping our communities informed and connected. Thank you to the SCC team for the meaningful conversation.

I’m also proud to be moving forward with a bill for AFSA Charter School - Academy for Sciences & Agriculture. We are officially getting the bill jackets ready to secure funding for their new greenhouse. I am constantly amazed by the advocacy of our students. Let’s get it done!

Human Services Committee

This week in the Human Services Committee, we heard a bill that effectively mandates redlining and regional segregation for our high-needs neighbors. It assumes people with disabilities are inherently a nuisance to communities.

I vehemently oppose this legislation and all attempts to discriminate against vulnerable communities. Rather than addressing housing instability or provider oversight, this bill sends a cruel, clear message: 'You are not welcome here.'

If this is a matter important to you, I encourage you to reach out to the bill authors to express your concerns. Advise them that cities and legislators with high-needs constituents should be advocating for adequate resources, better statewide affordable housing options, and increased provider oversight through state licensing.

It is unacceptable to redline any community, and we would never fathom imposing laws like this on any other protected class.

Watch my remarks here.
