Minnesota Queer Caucus Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision on Inclusion in Sports

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Today, the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling that upholds state laws that ban transgender girls and women from competing on women's school sports teams.

Following the ruling, the Minnesota Queer Caucus released the following statement:

"Today's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court changes nothing in Minnesota. Playing sports is a foundational part of American childhood, and every Minnesota child will continue to have the right to enjoy the benefits of playing with their friends, learning teamwork and getting exercise. We will continue to be a state where transgender, Two Spirit, nonbinary and intersex people have the right to participate fully in society, including sports. All of us are safer, healthier and happier when we have opportunities to form community with our peers, regardless of our differences.

“Republican billionaire donors and their lackeys created a fear campaign about the existence of trans people at a D.C. think tank to manipulate voters who are outraged at the economic devastation caused by Republicans. The truth is, Minnesota has one of the highest rates of participation in girls’ sports in the country, due in large part to our commitment to inclusion. We will continue to protect and support trans youth, because everyone belongs and has the freedom to thrive. We are forever in solidarity with Minnesota's community of trans girls and women, and we will fight alongside them for equality and inclusion until we achieve it.”

The chair of the Minnesota Senate Queer Caucus is Senator Clare Oumou Verbeten (DFL-St. Paul), and the chair of the Minnesota House Queer Caucus is Representative Brion Curran (DFL-White Bear Lake).
