Legislative update

Friday, March 20, 2026

Dear Neighbor,

As you may expect, another case of fraud came to light this week in St. Paul. At this point, it feels like these revelations are happening far too often, and that is unacceptable. While my GOP colleagues and I have been pushing for stronger oversight and real reforms to address this problem, those efforts have repeatedly been voted down. We cannot continue to ignore these warning signs. It’s time to take this seriously, put effective safeguards in place, and ensure taxpayer dollars are being protected.

The OLA Report on EIDBI

This week, the Office of the Legislative Auditor released a report on the state’s EIDBI program and found serious problems with how fraud was handled. The report shows that the Department of Human Services failed to investigate some credible allegations of kickbacks and did not always take action when red flags appeared. In some cases, complaints were closed without review or referred for further enforcement. The program has also grown quickly in recent years, making strong oversight even more important. Overall, the report makes it clear that better accountability and stronger safeguards are needed to prevent fraud and protect taxpayer dollars.

Governor Walz’s supplemental budget proposal

In other news, Governor Tim Walz released his supplemental budget proposal this week, and it raises some serious concerns. While the plan acknowledges potential savings from addressing fraud, it still relies on higher taxes and includes cuts to important areas like special education and nursing home funding. At a time when Minnesotans are already feeling the pressure of rising costs, this approach moves in the wrong direction. Instead of asking taxpayers to pay more while reducing core services, the focus should be on stopping fraud, improving accountability, and making our state more affordable.

Working to lower car tab fees

I’m proud to have signed on to HF 3562, a bill that works to lower the cost of vehicle registration for Minnesotans. After tab fees were increased in 2023 and 2024, and with suggestions to raise them even higher this session, this bill moves in the right direction. It reduces the rates used to calculate tab fees and makes them more reasonable as vehicles age, helping provide real relief for drivers. At a time when the cost of living is already high, this is a practical step to push back on rising fees and make everyday expenses more manageable.

Sincerely,

Jimmy
