Legislative update

Friday, March 27, 2026

Dear Neighbor,

We are coming up quickly on our first and second legislative deadlines this evening, which will change how our work looks for the remainder of the session. The main idea is that no new legislation can be introduced, and we will focus in on the work that has already been started. That is good news for our OIG bill, which started moving again this week, alongside other important legislation. I am happy to share a few updates with you here.

Working to lower car tab fees

This week, Democrats voted against a bill authored by Rep. Patti Anderson that would lower car tab fees for Minnesota drivers. Many families were hoping for relief, especially after the trifecta raised car tab fees in 2023 and talked this session about increasing them even further. By voting no, Democrats chose to keep costs high instead of giving hardworking Minnesotans a break on a regular household expense. As I shared last week, I am proud to have signed onto this bill and will continue fighting to ensure that Minnesotans keep more of their hard-earned money and don’t face ever-rising vehicle registration costs.

Progress on the OIG bill

The push for an independent Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has gained momentum after nearly a year of gridlock, finally making progress to address the need for enforcement authority to tackle Minnesota’s widespread fraud problem. Minor adjustments allowed the House State Government Finance Committee to approve SF856, keeping key Republican priorities of independence and enforcement intact, and the bill moved to the House Judiciary Committee this week. This legislation provides sorely needed oversight and accountability, aiming to address an estimated $9 billion in fraud across state programs, particularly in social services and Medicaid, while ensuring the OIG can operate free from political pressure to protect taxpayers and hold fraudsters accountable.

Establishing age verification on restaurant game kiosks

I introduced HF4310 to make sure Minnesotans understand what they’re paying for when using handheld gaming devices in restaurants. Right now, it can be confusing when a device requires payment to play games or access entertainment, and families may end up with unexpected charges. This bill requires stores to clearly display the cost and make sure users are old enough to consent to the purchase before playing. By making these details easy to see and understand, the bill protects consumers, helps families make informed choices, and holds restaurants accountable for fair and transparent transactions.

I am proud to fight for these meaningful and common-sense changes for our district and the state overall. I hope you have a great weekend as we head into the last week of Lent and Easter next weekend.

Sincerely,

Jimmy
