Legislative update

Friday, April 10, 2026

Dear Neighbor,

After a refreshing break last week for Easter and time spent back in the district, we have returned to St. Paul ready to dive into the work ahead. The pace is picking up quickly as we continue debating important issues and reviewing legislation on the House floor, moving closer to key decisions before the end of the session.

Preserving Girl’s Sports

One of the important issues we discussed this week was protecting girls’ sports. The House considered three bills, HF12, HF2685, and HF1233, aimed at keeping girls’ athletics reserved for biological females. These proposals were designed to maintain fair competition, protect opportunities for female athletes, and provide clear guidance for schools, athletic organizations, and families. The bills did not pass, but the discussion highlighted how important fairness, safety, and opportunity are in girls’ sports. Recent guidance from the International Olympic Committee and federal rulings under Title IX support protecting female athletes and ensuring a level playing field. I will continue working on solutions that give girls the chance to compete and succeed in sports while ensuring that athletic opportunities remain fair and safe for all participants. This is an issue that matters to families, coaches, and communities across Minnesota.

Fighting for Real Tax Relief

In addition, House Republicans are working to provide practical tax relief that helps Minnesota families keep more of their hard-earned money. Rising costs affect households in many ways, and we are focused on solutions that reduce everyday expenses. One key proposal, HF4487, would provide a one-time refund or credit for 2026 property taxes. This would give homeowners, farmers, and small property owners relief from a portion of their tax bills and help ease the financial burden many are facing.

In addition, we are working to reduce car tab fees and expand property tax refunds to lower costs for drivers and homeowners. These efforts are part of a broader plan to protect family budgets and make life more affordable for Minnesotans. Other proposals in our package include eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, enhancing childcare tax credits, and expanding dependent care assistance. Together, these measures aim to support families, help cover everyday costs, and give households more financial flexibility.

Joining the Education Finance Committee

I’m proud to share that I have recently been appointed to serve on the Education Finance Committee, in addition to the three committees I already serve on. This new role gives me the opportunity to take a closer look at the critical issues facing our schools, from funding formulas to classroom resources and student programs. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that funding is distributed fairly, so that every student has access to a high-quality education. Education is one of the most important investments we can make in our communities, and I am committed to helping make sure our schools have the resources they need to succeed.

Sincerely,

Jimmy
