The past few weeks have brought great heartache, fear, and loss to our community. I want to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Alex was a registered nurse working in the ICU at the VA, caring for our veterans. Renee was a poet, writer, wife, and mother. They were Minnesotans who believed in supporting their neighbors. Their lives mattered. May we honor their memory. I know the heart and values of our community are not in alignment with the illegal acts by ICE. No matter what side of the political aisle you are on, I am confident that we find ground on our shared belief that: - All human beings are created equal with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
- We all have freedom of religion, speech, press, and assembly
- People have the right to live under just laws
The American Dream is that through hard work, everyone can thrive and live in safety. And yet, ICE is taking people directly from job sites as they work to provide better lives for their families, federal agents are blocking state officials from investigating the killings of Minnesotans at their hand, and constitutional observers — essential witnesses to truth — are being targeted for violence. I’m incredibly grateful to see so many Minnesotans taking to the streets to help defend the rights of our neighbors. As we go through this difficult time, I have hope and faith in Minnesotans and I have never loved our state more than I do now. If there weren't video evidence of these atrocities, more Americans might believe the lies from the Trump administration. Instead, we believe our own eyes to find truth: ICE is to blame for this violence. ICE is making us ALL less safe. Photo by Tom Baker for MPR News As your state representative, I want to share some resources for local trainings, hotlines, and advocacy organizations helping to lead in this moment. Attorney General Ellison has also created a Federal Action Reporting Form to report harmful and illegal acts by ICE and Border Patrol. If your rights have been violated by federal immigration agents, as we have seen happen with increased regularity in recent days, please let the Minnesota Attorney General's Office know about it. My colleagues in the Senate DFL have put together a powerful and practical immigration resource toolkit. In the House, we have also compiled immigration resources, and they are available for our neighbors in English, Spanish, Somali, and Hmong. To my GOP colleagues: It is imperative for the wellness of our state and your constituents that ICE leave Minnesota. The time to stand up is now. We need you. We must take action together. To all Minnesotans: Continue standing arm in arm. Continue showing up. Continue delivering groceries, giving rides, and standing by each other. Minnesota is showing the world that we will not sit by while ICE terrorizes our communities. We are leading by example and creating a blueprint of resistance for other states should they be next on Trump’s list of terror. Thank you for being here. Thank you for showing the world why we are the Star of the North. I have never been more proud to be a Minnesotan.
