Legislative Update from Rep. Meg Luger-NikolaiDear Neighbors, I hope you’ve had an enjoyable and safe Fourth of July. During these extreme heat weather events, and with more on the way, it’s extremely important, especially for seniors and children, to stay indoors and in air-conditioned spaces when possible. Ramsey County has a cooling map you can access here to check out places to stay cool. A big thank you to everyone in our community who turned out for our town hall on a very hot and humid Monday evening! Real, positive change is possible when we show up for each other. A few topics of interest we discussed included strengthening gun safety laws, lowering property taxes, and how new housing investments we passed will help address shortages and keep our neighbors housed who were impacted by Metro Surge. There remains a real appetite to protect our community and our neighbors from federal overreach, and people very much want to see government working for them. I am looking forward to continuing to work on these priorities. New Laws in EffectOn July 1 of this month, new laws took effect from the legislation we passed. Some highlights include helping schools establish anonymous threat reporting systems so students and families can safely report concerning behavior, implementing a mandatory social media mental health warning, and more. You can find a list of the new laws and summaries here. While I’m glad for the progress we made in these areas, we could have given Minnesotans whose constitutional rights were violated by federal agents a legal remedy. We could have banned secret police by outlawing the use of masks and unmarked vehicles to terrorize our communities. We could have saved lives with an assault weapons ban and safe storage requirements. We could have delivered equal rights for all Minnesotans with the ERA. We could have delivered on the things Minnesotans are demanding most – if it wasn’t for Republicans blocking progress at every turn. If, when we head back to the Capitol in January, we have the power to pass bills without Republicans standing in our way, I believe we can get these things done. Regardless, I’ll continue to fight for these shared values no matter who is in power or what we’re up against. Keep in TouchThis is the final newsletter you’ll receive from me until 2027. Minnesota law requires that certain official communications halt 60 days after legislative adjournment in election years to not give an unfair advantage to incumbents. However, you can still reach out to my office with any questions, comments, and concerns. I can be reached at rep.meg.luger.nikolai@house.mn.gov or by phone at 651-296-8799. If you see me out and about in the neighborhood, please say hello. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Sincerely, Meg Luger-Nikolai State Representative |
